The Bottom Line

Fujitsu's LifeBook S6240 thin and light notebook is really a corporate notebook that is being package for sales towards consumers, and that isn't a bad thing but other systems offer more for roughly the same price.

Guide Review - Fujitsu LifeBook S6240

11/15/05 – Fujitsu's LifeBook series of notebooks takes a much more traditional approach to design. Rather than fixed drives and wide screen displays, the LifeBook S6240 uses a modular drive design with a 4:3 ratio LCD panel.

The S6240 is powered by the Intel Pentium M 750 (1.86GHz) processor that is standard in most thin and light systems. Instead of matching this up with more traditional PC3200 DDR, it comes with 512MB of PC2-4200 DDR2 memory for improved memory performance. The amount of RAM should be sufficient for most applications.

The 60GB 5,400rpm hard drive handles file storage and is a bit below average for a thin and light system. The multiformat DVD burner comes in a modular bay that can be swapped out for an optional battery for extended usage when the drive isn't needed. This makes the LifeBook a bit more flexible than most thin and light notebook computers. Digital peripheral cards are limited to either SD or Memory Stick flash memory.

As mentioned earlier, the S6240 uses a more traditional 4:3 aspect ratio display. The 13.3” LCD screen provides a very compact form factor that makes the system very portable. In fact, the dimensions and weight only barely push the system past the ultraportable size. Don't expect to use the system for much 3D graphics with the integrated Intel GMA 900 processor.

Overall the Fujitsu is well suited for a business traveler who wants more power than an ultraportable but still in a very compact notebook.
