11/22/08 - Velocity Micro's NoteMagix laptops are generally known for their customization options. This is key because the base configurations generally are hampered by lesser components that will hamper performance. Take for instance the base NoteMagix M15 Ultra. The Core 2 Duo P7350 is a decent processor, but just 1GB of RAM will end up slowing down the system and the 160GB hard drive has limited storage space. Now this wouldn't be much of a problem because of all of the upgrade options, but the M15 Ultra is much more restricted with just the memory, processor, hard drive and software really available for adjustment by the consumer at purchase.
One aspect of the NoteMagix M15 Ultra that is really good is the graphics. While users are limited to just the one 1280x800 resolution 15.4-inch panel, it is driven by a very power NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics with 512MB of memory. This gives the system sufficient power for high definition video streams or 3D gaming. Too bad Velocity Micro doesn't offer a Blu-ray drive as an option.
Connecting peripherals to the NoteMagix M15 Ultra isn't an issue thanks to the wide variety of peripheral ports. In addition to the traditional USB, FireWire and ExpressCard, Velocity Micro has also included the new eSATA port for high speed external storage and both HDMI and DisplayPort connectors for hooking it up to the latest high resolution digital displays. Those looking to use the system with a DVI or VGA based monitor will need to use an adapter.
The big problem with the Velocity Micro NoteMagix M15 Ultra though is the price. The base price puts it at a much higher price but with features that can be found in less expensive systems. Add to this that there will really need to be a few upgrades to really make the system useful.
