5/26/04 - Sony has really pushed for the convergence of music and video with their VAIO line of computer systems, but the V505EX is a bit of a departure from that. The system is more geared torwards general purpose computing than its previous models.
Powering the V505EX is an Intel Pentium M 1.5GHz processor. This should be sufficient for all computing tasks. Matched to this is 512MB of PC2700 memory that should help the system perform well even under stressed conditions.
Storage is provide through a large 60GB hard drive. Also included is a 24x CD-RW Combo optical drive that allows for CD music or data storage and DVD viewing. Sony also includes a standard memory stick slot to be compatible with their portable digital devices.
One of the drawbacks to the V505EX is the screen size. It uses a smaller 12.1" XGA screen that is smaller than most thin and light notebooks. This is a concious decision though to keep the size and weight of the notebook down. Graphics are handled by the ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 processor with 32MB of memory.
Since Sony is still focused on multimedia convergence, the V505EX comes with its standard suite of multimedia applications. This includes a range of programs that handle music, images and even video. The V505EX isn't well suited to digital video.
In the end, the Sony VAIO PCG-V505EX makes for a good general purpose thin and light notebook computer for those looking to carry around their system a lot.
