The Bottom Line
Sony's VAIO VGN-FE890N/H thin and light notebook has some great overall features that make it an excellent business or consumer notebook. It could have been a great notebook if only it didn't have a few minor flaws.

Guide Review - Sony VAIO VGN-FE890N/H Thin and Light Notebook Review

5/15/07 – Sony packs an amazing amount of features into their VGN-FE890N/H thin and light notebook. This is a system that can easily work as an office computer or as a consumer home computer. The balance and features and price make it suited to either.

The system should have no problem running applications at all thanks to the dual core Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 processor and its two full gigabytes of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory. This is important as two gigabytes is really the amount of RAM you want to have when using the new Vista operating systems.

The VGN-FE890N/H provides plenty of storage space with its 160GB hard drive. The only drawback to this is that Sony decided to use a slower spinning 4200rpm drive over the more common 5400rpm drives. This reduces the performance of the data from the drive but it does help boost the battery life slightly.

While many thin and light notebooks are starting to turn to integrated graphics, Sony has included the dedicated GeForce Go 7400 graphics processor. While this isn't a high end 3D graphics processor for gaming, it still can run them. The big difference though is that it lets the VGN-FE890N/H actually utilize the Vista Aero interface fully that the integrated solutions do not fully allow.

The main drawback to consumers looking at the system though is the Vista Business Edition operating system. This does add some useful networking and backup features that they can use and are great for businesses, but it lacks some of the multimedia functions that consumers will likely want to use. The VAIO software suite does cover some of these functions but not all of them.
