5/25/06 – Sony is one of the last major manufacturers to transition their notebook computers from the older Pentium M processors to the newer Core Duo. This puts their current generation of thin and light notebooks at a disadvantage compared to other systems. The VAIO VGN-FJ290 still uses the Pentium M 750. While this is a strong processor, its memory controller and multitasking performance is not as good as the newer Core Duo platform. The 1GB of DDR2 memory does allow it to run most applications without too much difficulty.
While the processor may be a bit dated, the storage is quite good. The 100GB hard drive provides plenty of storage space for programs and files and it spins at the faster 5400rpm speed providing strong performance. A dual layer DVD burner is included to allow users to create music, movie and data CDs or DVDs.
Graphics wise the VGN-FJ290 is a bit below par. The 14.1” wide screen LCD panel is very good with high brightness and contrast levels, but it is driven by an older Intel GMA 900 integrated graphics chip. This prevents the system from having much 3D performance for things such as gaming or the upcoming Aero interface for Windows XP.
One area that Sony does well in is style. One of the better aspects of the FJ series is the multiple colors that consumers have to chose from for their notebook. Most companies only provide a single color scheme for their models.
