11/16/06 Toshiba's Satellite M series of notebooks has been a very successful line of multimedia notebooks and the M155-S3144 is no different in that regards. The system still features the ability to playback DVDs and CDs without booting up the operating system. About the only multimedia feature it doesn't have is a TV tuner that is reserved for the Qosmio line.
Powering the Satellite M115-S3144 is the new Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 dual core processor. This is one of the lowest speed Core 2 Duo processors available, but performance is still good and it does have the advantage of 64-bit software support and improved battery life over the old Core Duo. Amazingly Toshiba includes 2GB of memory with the system that let it run smoothly with just about every applications possible. It would have been nice to see them use PC2-5300 DDR memory instead of slower PC2-4200 modules.
Storage is a bit about average for the Satellite M115-S3144. Most thin and lights come with 80 to 100GB hard drives while Toshiba has put in a 120GB drive for data and applications. In addition, they have included a 8x DVD+/-RW dual layer burn to record and playback DVDs and CDs.
Graphics are an important part to a multimedia notebook and the M115-S3144 is a mixed bag. The 14.1 wide screen LCD is small yet bright and easy to use. The problem is the integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics that really prevent the system from having any 3D performance. Most thin and light notebooks on the market are shipping with dedicated graphics cores and this really hurts this model.
