5/27/04 - Toshiba's Satellite series can be difficult to follow with the constant model changes. Their latest thin and light system is the M35-S320 that offers a good deal for its pricing.
The Satellite M35-S320 is based around the new Centrino package from Intel, with a 1.5GHz Pentium M processor and the new 802.11b/g wireless controller. Matched to the processor is 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory that should provide good performance for most applications.
Storage is provided by a fairly sizable 60GB hard drive. The drawback to the drive is that is runs at a slower 4,200rpm speed. Many systems are now offering the 5,400rpm drives that offer better disk performance. Optical storage is handled by a 24x CD-RW combo drive making this a good portable DVD player.
Graphics are handled by a somewhat dated NVIDIA GeForce go5200 processor. While this dedicated processor is DirectX 9 compatible, the system is not well suited to those looking to play any serious video games. The display though is a very nice 15.4" wide LCD display with a 1280x800 resolution that is great for watching DVDs on.
Overall, the Toshiba Satellite M35-S320 is a solid thin and light notebook. While a bit on the large size due to its wide screen display, it still maintains its portability.
