The Bottom Line
Those looking for a highly portable gaming notebook or one to be used for graphics would be well served by looking at the Velocity Micro NoteMagix L80 Ultra. While more expensive than the average thin and light notebook, it is still cheaper than many of the prestige PC manufacturers systems.

Guide Review - Velocity Micro NoteMagix L80 Ultra

11/17/06 – The Velocity Micro NoteMagix L80 Ultra is defined by its graphics capabilities. The system features a very high resolution 15.4” LCD display. This is great for those wanting a large and high detailed graphics workspace, but it could be problematic for those with bad eyesight. Still, its great for gamers since they also include a strong NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600GS graphics processor. It should be able to play games at these high resolutions but probably not with filtering enabled.

Gaming and graphics also require a lot of power, and for that the NoteMagix L80 Ultra uses the new Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor. The processor performs quite well and provides support for upcoming 64-bit Vista OS and improved battery life over the older Core Duo. A full gigabyte of PC2-5300 DDR memory from Corsair allows it to run most programs without a problem.

Storage is only average for the NoteMagix L80 Ultra. An 80GB hard drive provides space for programs and data, but it could quickly fill up for heavy digital media users. An 8x dual layer DVD+/-RW burner is included for reading and playing back music, movie or data CDs and DVDs.

Another downside to the NoteMagix L80 Ultra is the lack of application software. Users wanting productivity or security software with their purchase will need to upgrade the system to include these packages. This can be a problem especially considering the cost of the system, but gamers may well buy it over more expensive prestige gaming notebooks.
