11/14/07 – The NoteMagix C90 Ultra is very unique among thin and light notebooks. Velocity Micro managed to build a desktop replacement system in a smaller form factor. It is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 dual core desktop processor. This gives it extremely fast performance numbers that rival some of the higher end mobile processor. But it comes with a very high price. The desktop processors are not really designed for the low power consumption of batteries. As a result, battery life when it is not plugged in is extremely low.
It is very clear that the NoteMagix C90 Ultra is designed as a mobile gaming platform based upon its graphics. The 15.4” screen features an extremely high 1680x1050 resolution. This is great for high details when gaming or having a lot of applications open, but it can get difficult to read the small text. An NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT handles the graphics and is capable of supporting Direct X 10 games. The 512MB of memory let's it handle high resolution and textures, but this can be problematic in modern games at extremely high resolution.
Storage is a very mixed bag. The 120GB hard drive is on the small side for a notebook of this size and price range. At least they make up for this by including a relatively new eSATA connector for use with the new external SATA standard. A dual layer DVD burner handles all playback and recording of CD and DVD media.
Another nice feature on the NoteMagix C90 Ultra is the webcam. It is a 2 megapixel model built into the top of the display. The nice feature about it is that it can be fully rotated so that it isn't just a fixed view towards the user.
