Guide Review - WinBook T230

6/26/06 – Just looking at the specifications of the WinBook T230 thin and light notebook, it doesn't appear too different from many others. It is powered by the popular Intel Core Duo T2300 mobile processor. This provides a good amount of performance while still providing good battery life. In fact, during the battery rundown test using DVD playback, the system was able to run a full two hours and five minutes before the automatic suspend kicked in. While not as high as some smaller systems using the Core Solo low voltage CPUs, it is still respectable.

Storage is quite strong for the WinBook T230. The system comes with a very large 120GB 5,400rpm SATA hard drive. This provides plenty of storage space for programs and data and also has quite good performance for a notebook drive. An 8x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner is included for creating or playing back of CDs and DVDs.

Graphics wise the T230 is on par with other systems. It uses the integrated Intel GMA 945 processor that is fine for 2D applications and most basic 3D applications. It would be nice to see more systems use dedicated graphics processors but that would add to the costs of the notebooks and cut down the battery life. The 14” wide LCD screen features a very glossy coating that is great for watching movies or working in an office environment. The problem is that same coating makes the screen pretty much impossible to read in bright sunlight.
