Guide Review - WinBook X530

12/6/04 - WinBook, like many other PC manufacturers, noticed that most people don't purchase ultraportable notebooks because they tend to lack features, but they still want mobility. This is where the WinBook X series falls into. It is slightly larger than an ultraportable, but has all the features one expects to find in a notebook.

Powering the WinBook X530 model is the Pentium M 725 (1.6GHz) processor. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory. This should provide the X530 with a good amount of processing power to go through most applications without too many problems or use up much battery life.

Storage on the X530 is good for the price. The system comes with a large 80GB hard drive not found on many notebooks at this price level. It also features a CD-RW combo drive to allow burning of data or music CDs while still allowing for DVD playback. Also included is a media card slot that supports Secure Digital, Memory Stick and xD flash cards.

As with most portable system, graphics are not the strongest suit for highly portable system. The X530 uses the Intel Extreme graphics which suffice well for 2D graphics but limits 3D applications such as gaming. The 12.1" wide screen display is nice for watching movies on the system and expanding the desktop.

Overall, the X530 is a very strong machine for the price. It provides a very competent system in a package not much larger than some ultraportable notebooks.
