The Bottom Line

May 13 2009 - Cyberpower's Xplorer X5-7900 is a low cost high performance laptop that makes a few compromises in order to keep costs down. The system is clearly one of the faster on the market thanks to Intel Core 2 Duo T series processor and the incredibly large 500GB hard drive. All of this performance does reduce the battery life somewhat compared to other systems in the same price range. The system is free of trialware found on other laptops but it is also free of any software bundles at all.

Pros

  • Higher Performance Dual Core Processor
  • Larger Hard Drive
  • Highly Customizable

Cons

  • No Software Bundles Included
  • Below Average Battery Life Due to Performance Components

Guide Review - Cyberpower Xplorer X5-7900 15.4-inch Thin and Light Laptop PC

May 13 2009 - Cyberpower's Xplorer X5 is based around the MSI-1651 15.4-inch laptop chassis. The X5-7900 is their highest version designed for performance. It is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 dual core processor. The extra performance does come at a slightly reduced battery life due to the extra power demands. The DDR2 memory does hold it back a bit compared to a laptop running faster DDR3. Most people probably won't notice the difference and it does help keep the cost down under $1100.

One aspect that many people will probably like about the Xplorer X5-7900 is the extremely large 500GB hard drive that gives it roughly 50% more storage space than the typical 320GB drive used in this price range. The drive does spin at a slower 5400rpm spin rate, but the higher density of the drive platters gives it nearly equal performance to a 320GB 7200rpm drive.

Those that want to do some gaming on the system will be please to know that the 15.4-inch screen is backed up by an NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor with 512MB of memory. This should power it just fine for most of today's PC games up to the 1280x800 resolution.

One thing that is both good and bad with the Xplorer X5-7900 is the software. Many laptops now come packaged with a large amount of trail applications. Cyberpower does not have these on their laptops which will please many people. The problem is that it does not come with any application software such as word processing, multimedia or security beyond what is in the Vista operating system. This can add some cost to those that need certain applications.

Now, if these items don't necessarily fit what you want out of a 15.4-inch laptop, Cyberpower offers a wide range of customized parts for the processor, hard drive, accessories and software.
