9/4/06 - Acer's TravelMate 3012WTMi uses the Intel Core Duo T2300 mobile processor. This provides strong multitasking capabilities even though it is not as powerful as higher grade models. It does reduce the battery life some compared to single core processors but is a step up from older Pentium M processors. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2-4200 DDR2 memory that is sufficient for basic productivity applications but those running more intensive applications will want to upgrade.
The storage for the TravelMate 3012WTMi is mixed. The 80GB hard drive provides plenty of storage space and the 5400rpm spin rate provides strong performance. While the system does include a multiformat DVD burner, it is an external unit rather than integrated into the notebook. This is something to consider as the 4 pound weight is on the heavy side for an ultraportable and the external drive is extra weight that might have to be carried.
Graphics and networking are fairly standard for a ultraportable system. It uses a 12.1” wide screen LCD display that provides good visibility without straining the eyes. Graphics are powered by the Intel GMA 950 so 3D performance is very restricted. Support is included for the 802.11a, b and g standards as well as Bluetooth for wireless peripherals.
One area that could be improved with the TravelMate 3012WTMi is the software. It comes with a very limited set of utilities and no productivity software.
