Guide Review - Toshiba Libretto U105

3/23/06 – Toshiba first introduced the Libretto many years ago to a lukewarm market. The system while quite small just didn't have the power to do much. The new Libretto U105 is much different from the original models making it a very functional ultraportable.

The system uses the Intel Pentium M 753 ultra low voltage processor that allows it to run Windows just as any other notebook computer but consume much less energy. While the system uses slower PC2700 DDR memory than what is found on new systems, it is still quite functional thanks to its 512MB total.

Since the system is so small, no internal optical drive is possible. Instead the Libretto U105 comes with an external dock that the notebook can be plugged into that features a 24x CD/DVD combo drive. While this will let the system play DVD movies or record music and data CDs, the extra bulk does reduce the portability of the notebook. The 60GB hard drive on the other hand seems to be about average for the storage found on ultraportables.

The 7.2” wide screen LCD panel is about all that can fit on this tiny unit. With its 1280x768 resolution, it will also cause difficulty for many people trying to use the screen due to the small pixel size. The dimension would be good for a portable movie player, but external dock prevents it from being very functional.

Overall the Libretto U105 isn't a bad machine, it is just a very niche product. Its small size makes it very portable but also much more difficult to use.
