Guide Review - Toshiba Portege R205

3/22/06 – Most companies try to reduce the size of the whole notebook when designing ultraportable computers. Toshiba took a different approach with the Portege R series by instead trying to make them as thin as possible. In fact, you might mistake the Portege for a pad of paper inside of a briefcase with its svelte .8” thickness.

Powering the Portege R205 is the Intel Pentium M 753 ultra low voltage processor. This is a popular choice for ultraportables thanks to its good performance and low power consumption. While the system comes with 512MB of PC2-3200 DDR2 memory, be aware that the thin dimensions limit the potential upgrading of the memory to a maximum of 1.2GB.

Storage has to be sacrificed on the Portege R205. In order to get the system so thin, the 24x CD/DVD combo drive is an external USB drive instead of internal. This means an additional peripheral to carry around if you need the drive. The hard drive has a fairly sizable 60GB of storage space, but it is not possible to upgrade this on the system.

The dimensions of the Portege R205 allow the system to have a larger 12.1” LCD screen that makes it much easier to read and work with. It is powered by the Intel GMA900 which is common to most ultraportable notebooks.

Finally, the Portege R205 offers a number of security features such as a fingerprint scanner and truster platform module for those that need to extra protection of their system and data.
