Guide Review - Lenovo ThinkPad X41 Tablet
9/4/05 – The ThinkPad X series have always been strong seller thanks in part to the corporate business that IBM draws. With the purchase by Lenovo, it was uncertain what innovation would be brought to this venerable product line. The new ThinkPad X41 Tablet is the first major product release since the purchase.
What sets the X41 Tablet apart from other ultraportables is its ability to be used as a Tablet PC thanks to the touch screen and the XP Tablet operating system. The screen is convertible meaning that it can be used as a regular notebook or flipped around to be carried and written on just like a pad of paper.
Powering the X41 Tablet is the Intel Pentium M 758 (1.5GHz) processor. This is a more powerful processor than is used by most ultraportables which gives it much stronger performance but it also uses more power giving it a somewhat lower battery life. This is an acceptable trade off for most users. The 512MB of PC2-4200 DDR2 memory gives it much faster response times to memory intensive applications.
One thing that Lenovo has not brought to the X41 tablet is an optical drive. It still lacks any form of CD or DVD storage that limits its portability by the need for an external device not included. The 40GB hard drive is about average for the ultraportable market.
The ThinkPad X41 Tablet is a nice upgrade to the X series of ultraportables, but it is showing its age in design and the lack of features that are overshadowed by other companies.
