9/9/05 – Data security is a very important issue for business personnel especially when notebook thefts are on the rise. Toshiba is trying to address this issue with a host of security features added to its new Portege R200 ultraportable.
In order to facilitate the security of the data on the R200, the system features a Trusted Platform Module and a fingerprint reader. With both of these implemented, the system can be setup to only allow access to the system and data through people registered to use the system via the fingerprint scanner.
Powering the Portege R200 is the Intel Pentium M 752 (1.2GHz) ultra low voltage processor. This power saving processor provides a good amount of battery life while still providing enough processing power to run office applications. This is matched up with 512MB of PC3200 DDR memory.
Storage is a bit disappointing as the R200 still does not come with an internal optical drive. A separate external drive can be purchased to add this ability but it also adds weight and bulk. The hard drive is a smaller 1.8” drive that Toshiba specializes in building and comes with a fairly large 60GB storage capacity.
The 12.1” LCD screen is much larger than the average ultraportable notebook computer and is a welcome feature for those people who have limited eyesight. This increased size also allows for a keyboard that is more accurate to a full sized keyboard compared to the smaller keys on other ultraportables.
